As Vice President of Investigations, Joe Cordes oversees all of MSA’s comprehensive investigative services. Mr. Cordes is a 24-year veteran of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), who retired in 2009 as a Deputy Inspector in the Counterterrorism Division.  During his career at NYPD, he commanded Investigative, Counterterrorism, Narcotics and Patrol units.

Mr. Cordes’s extensive investigative roles at NYPD include serving as the Commanding Officer of the Headquarters Teams of the Organized Crime Investigations Division.  In this position, he directed organized crime investigations, including gambling, narcotics sales, racketeering, money laundering and trademark and copyright infringement. As a Captain, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Southeast Queens Narcotics Initiative and as a Lieutenant he commanded the 33rd Precinct Detective Squad in Washington Heights, as well as the 32nd Precinct Detective Squad in Harlem.

At the Counterterrorism Division, Mr. Cordes was the Patrol Borough and Citywide Maritime Sector Counterterrorism Coordinator.  Prior to that assignment, he served as an Executive Officer where he was instrumental in the development of the NYPD Shield private sector outreach program. Additionally, he developed and implemented special event physical security protection for such events as the NYC Republican National Convention in 2004 and the annual Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration.  As the NYPD’s Chair of the High Explosives Working Group, he spearheaded a collaborative effort with the U.S. House of Representatives, Homeland Security Committee to shape legislation controlling bomb precursor chemicals, which eventually became law.

Mr. Cordes holds a Masters of Science in Public Administration from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, a Bachelors of Science in Public Communication from the City University of New York, and an Associates Degree in Business Administration from the City University of New York.  He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy, 198th Session.  He was accepted as a member of the NYPD’s Honor Legion in 1993 and was granted a Top Secret security clearance by the FBI.
